What is roller derby and how is it played?
Roller derby is full-contact. It is competitive roller skating on quads (four-wheeled skates) around
a flat, oval track in a counter-clockwise direction. Each game, (called a bout) consists of two, 30-
minute periods. Each period consists of a number of "jams", which are a maximum of 2 minutes
long.
A typical jam consists of five roller girls from each team (the collective of both teams on the track
is called a "pack"); 1 jammer, 1 pivot, and three blockers. The jammer scores points for her team,
the pivot maintains the speed and order of her pack, and the blockers attempt to prevent the
opposing team's jammer from scoring points while assisting their own jammer in getting
through the pack. The jammers scores one point for each opposing team member she passes
legally in the pack.
A legal block (a.k.a. hit) is one that is executed using the body from shoulder to hip and only
using the arm from shoulder to elbow. There is no tripping, no elbows, pushing, pulling, "clothes-
lining", or fighting permitted. Any block that employs any of these tactics, or involves any use of
the forearm or hand, is considered illegal and will draw a penalty.

Is roller derby “fake?”
No! The flat-track roller derby we play is a real sport with no choreography!
What if I haven’t been on skates since Junior High? Should I even attempt
roller derby?
You'd be surprised how many of us hadn't skated for years before joining and how quickly it
comes back when you work hard. If you're thinking of joining us, strap on your skates as soon as
possible and wear them as often as possible. Hit the roller rink with your girlfriends. Just get
comfortable on your wheels and start building up your muscles and endurance. Roller derby is a
highly aggressive full-contact sport and our skaters consider themselves athletes. We train
accordingly. We also like to keep a sense of humor, with our snazzy uniforms and saucy names.
After all, the real reason we play the game is because its so much FUN!
